Tortilis Camp Attractions

The guides have an intimate knowledge of the park's five different wildlife habitats, which are home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Amboseli is the best place in Kenya to watch elephants, and you may see cheetahs and lions among the big cats. The park also has a large concentration of Maasai giraffe, buffalo, zebra, eland, Coke's hartebeest, waterbuck, gazelle and impala.

Tortilis Camp Facilities

Tortilis Camp is named after the local Acacia Tortilis, set in one of Amboseli's few remaining areas of unspoilt woodland. The camp is managed as a conservation project. Our goal is simple: to take a sensitive approach to tourism. To assure the long term future of Amboseli through natural biodiversity, part of the money we make is used for environmental restoration. Tortilis Camp is an exclusive tented lodge on the edge of the Amboseli National Game Reserve. A luxurious hillside eerie. From Tortilis, you can see for miles across the plains of Amboseli into Tanzania, as far as Mount Meru silhouetted against the horizon. Relax in the lounge and gaze at the awe-inspiring view of Africa's highest mountain: Kilimanjaro. We had to lay on something special to entice you back from your tent. Your tent is naturally screened by trees and shrubs from others. At night, the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep. Before you join us for drinks and dinner, enjoy the view from your tent verandah. Watch elephant families close by as they forage just outside camp. Guests sleep under canvas, but in style. Large comfortable beds, elegant bathrooms (with steaming hot showers and modern toilets) and a hot cup of tea at your bedside when you wake up. Laze by the pool with a refreshing drink. Swim and relax until its time for a game drive and sundowners. We are renowned for our delicious homestyle cuisine. Fresh herbs and vegetables are grown in camp and homemade pasta, Tortilis' speciality, is carefully prepared by the chef, trained by the owner's mother in good Italian home cooking. And to work up your appetite, you can enjoy the luxury of stepping out of the camp with a Masai expert for a guided gamewalk outside the park. Alternatively, one of our drivers will take you on a gamedrive through the park.

Sentrim Amboseli

Sentrim Amboseli's location deep inside the reserve guarantees close encounters with the park's renowned elephants. Also happily roaming the grasslands are buffallos, wildebeast, zebra, giraffes, impalas and several predators. Located 280 kilometers south of Nairobi and 260 kilometers north of Mombasa. During the wet season, the rains flood the lake bed and the surrounding area.

Though, this plentiful water does not sustain a rich vegetal variety. The cause is the high salt deposits in the lake bed, which the flood dilute and disperse hindering plant growth. For this reason few trees grow in the park, only small patches of acacia and some palm trees far off the lake. Contrariwise, salt-rich pastures grow and are very appreciated by the herbivores. Despite the first impression of a dusty and arid land, actually Amboseli is overflowing with water all the year round, but under the ground.

The snows of Kilimanjaro melt and flow downhill, soaking the porous subsoil layers of volcanic rocks. Waters converge into various underground streams, that rise in two clear water springs in the center of the park and ooze from down under in several points giving birth to large marshes like the Loginya Swamp, in which papyrus grow and elephants, hippos and buffalos find their particular spas, together with their accompanying cattle egrets
