Galdessa Camp Location

Galdessa Camp is situated in the heart of Kenya's largest park, Tsavo East National Park, on the banks of the Galana River. The site is 15 km upstream of Lugards Falls, famous for its beautiful rock formations, where there is also an airstrip, which can be used for private aircraft transfers.

Galdessa Camp Attractions

Galdessa Camp's remote access in a very wild part of the park ensures that tourism is kept to a minimum, enhancing the intimacy the camp, and our guests, enjoy with Nature.

Galdessa Camp Facilities

Under the shade of the doum palms, the camp's 8 spacious "bandas" are comfortable, fresh, and elegant. Set well apart, they all face the river and the Yatta Plateau, the world's largest fossilized lava flow (over 200km long). The term "banda" is an African word describing a bungalow-like structure enhanced by the best attributes a true-tented camp accommodation has to offer. Two of our bandas are organised in suites, with their own, separate thatched sitting room where private meals may also be served. Our most remote banda is ideal for honeymooners in search of privacy, with its own sitting room, viewing platform and water wallow. The Camp's location on the river makes it ideal for sightings along its bed, either side of Galdessa Camp.

Galdessa Camp Additional Information

Our open four-wheel-drive Toyota Land-Cruisers will take you to explore this route and others along its seasonal tributaries, known as luggas. These are favourites of lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos, as game always needs water, and luggas often have permanent pools. Longer game drives can be arranged to the Park's farther reaches, on day outings, with picnic lunches or with a 3-course lunch awaiting you with iced drinks at our selected lunch camp sites. Bush breakfasts and dinners are also organized. Galdessa Camp specializes in Nature Tourism and Tsavo is great walking country, which offers nature lovers wonderful walks and game sightings. We organize leisurely walks along the Galana River, starting at the spectacular rock formation of Lugards Falls, stopping along the way to fish for catfish under the watchful eyes of hippos and crocodiles, and ending up with cocktails while the sunsets over Mount Kilimanjaro.

FINCH HATTONS LUXURY TENTED LODGE

Samburu, Shaba, Laikipia and Meru. Tsavo west

If one camp has most often been described as Africa’s ultimate ‘bush luxury’, it must surely be Finch Hattons.

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Lodge Location

Located in a 35-acre concession in the southwestern corner of Tsavo West, Finch Hattons overlooks a series of spring-fed pools that attract some of Africa’s most diverse game, from herds of elephant and buffalo to lions, leopards, and – the camp’s natural piece de resistance – a huge pod of hippos, which bathe the area in their sonorous chorus.

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Lodge Attractions

Three-time winner of Kenya’s coveted ‘Best Tented Camp’ award, this magnificent camp in the heart of Kenya’s largest national park has defined the entire art of luxury camping. To land on the private airstrip at Finch Hattons is to touch down in the years of the first grand safaris – and their charming hosts. The camp is run by renowned hotelier Peter Frank and his wife Connie, who go out of their way to emulate the atmosphere of the great early safaris – and the greatest host of them all, Denys Finch-Hatton. (Although best known for Robert Redford’s romantic portrayal, Finch-Hatton was one of the greatest guides of his day – the pioneer of such safari ‘indispensables’ as 10-foot-high tents, cut crystal and fine wines.)

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Lodge Facilities

Today, Denys Finch Hattons legacy thrives at the camp, where the glittering dining room boasts Flemish chandeliers, German crystal, and the best vintage wines – all accompanied by Kenya’s finest safari cuisine. The tents themselves are a striking picture of sophistication, with luxurious beds, antique writing desks, minibars, and spacious bathrooms with solar-heated water. The main lodge offers a dining hall, bar, lounge and mezzanine library - the latter a favourite spot for post-prandial coffees and delicious petit fours. Food is taken very seriously here. Dinner is always a "production". Served by waiters wearing the khanzu, the traditional snowy-white tunic that servants wore in the colonial period but which is now worn with pride, the five courses are served skilfully and thoughtfully. The cooking is accomplished and indulgent and the continental deserts made by the Finch Hattons patisserie are superb. A well-stocked cellar offers an excellent range of European, American and South African wines. Finch Hattons strives to minimize its impact on this fragile land, with mulching of biodegradable waste, use of eco-friendly products, and support for local conservation initiatives.

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Lodge Additional Information

The 35 acres that form Finch Hattons Lodge are unfenced. Lion, buffalo, elephant, giraffe and plains game may come and go as they wish. Hippo and crocodiles live in the three huge pools on the site and the hippos often graze around the tents. Therefore, armed askaris escort you back to your tent when you wish to retire. A close encounter with a hippo reminds you that you are in Africa and anything might happen.
